Parent, Grandparent

The Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship program allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents or grandparents for permanent residency. A lot immigrants who are Canadian citizen or Permanent resident are looking to being in their parents as permanent residence but unfortunately despite of meeting all the requirement very few get a chance to actually fulfil their dreams.

This program was working on a lottery based system, a limited number of applications are admitted every year. Each year this program opens on the first business day of January and usually closes in few weeks only.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada says it will scrap its controversial randomized selection process for its Parents and Grandparents Program in 2019 and revert to a first-come, first-served approach to inviting interested sponsors to apply.

The move was announced August 20, 2018 in a news release that also said Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (IRCC) will accept up to 20,000 new sponsorship applications next year through the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP).

Eligibility of the Sponsor

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident

Must meet or exceed the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) ie Low Income Cut Off (LICO) plus 30% for the 3 previous years as is the case with sponsoring Parents and Grandparent. Sponsors must provide Notices of Assessment (NOA’S) from the CRA to IRCC as proof that they meet these requirements.

Must sign and Undertaking that commits the Sponsor to provide financial support. Should the sponsored Parents or Grandparents be in receipt of any social assistance then the sponsor is responsible for repayment of these benefits paid to the sponsored family members for 20 years from the date that they obtain Permanent Residence for Canada.

An online form is available which filled by the interested sponsor with the start of each new year during the month of January. The lucky ones are invited to send in their full application to sponsor their parents and grandparents. They only have 90 days to submit their application to the IRCC for compliance.
